Most people planning a bathroom remodel spend their time on tile and vanities. Those matter, but the parts that decide whether a bathroom lasts are the ones you stop seeing once the job is done. Here are the four things an experienced remodeler checks on every bathroom, and how to use them to hire the right pro.
1. The water you can't see: waterproofing
Tile and grout are not waterproof. Water soaks through grout lines every time you shower. What protects the wall and floor is a waterproof layer installed over the whole shower before a single tile goes up: a sheet membrane, a liquid membrane rolled on in coats, or a foam board system with sealed seams.
- It covers the whole wet area, not just the spots that look wet
- Corners, seams, the valve and the niche are sealed
- Many pros flood-test the shower floor before tiling
2. A floor that slopes to the drain
A shower floor should fall gently toward the drain everywhere, so water never sits in a corner. The simple test: pour a cup of water on the finished floor. It should run to the drain, not pool. A bathroom floor outside the shower should be level and solid, with no soft spots near the toilet or tub.
3. Ask every remodeler the same question
The fastest way to compare remodelers is to ask each one the same thing: How do you waterproof the shower? The best answers are specific. They name the system, explain how the seams and corners are sealed, and tell you whether they test it before tile. Then compare the rest on equal terms:
| Ask | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| How do you waterproof the shower? | The most important hidden step |
| Who pulls the permit? | Plumbing, wiring and wall changes usually need one |
| What is the schedule, step by step? | Shows the order: demo, rough-in, inspection, waterproofing, tile, fixtures |
| What is included and what is not? | Fixtures, tile, paint, haul-away and cleanup listed |
| How is extra work approved? | No surprises on the final bill |
4. Expect a surprise when the walls open
Old bathrooms hide things: a slow leak behind the tub, a soft subfloor by the toilet, old wiring or pipes. Finding them is a good thing; it is the one chance to fix them. What matters is agreeing before work starts how extra work gets approved: your pro shows you what they found, explains the fix, and you decide together before it is done.
What a good bathroom remodel looks like when it is done
- Grout lines are even and the tile is flat, with no lips between tiles
- Water runs to the drain and nothing drips outside the shower
- Caulk at the tub, shower and counter is clean and continuous
- The fan runs quietly and clears the mirror
- Doors and drawers open without hitting anything
What to put in your post
- Full remodel or specific parts: shower, tub, tile, vanity, toilet
- Whether anything moves: the toilet, the shower, the sink
- Photos of the bathroom now and ideas you like
- Your timing, and whether this is your only bathroom
